You are going to write a short story about Noah’s journey with his boat. The story should have the following ingredients:

• A day on Noah’s boat where some of the animals for some reason come into conflict with one another.
• An ending. Does Noah come safely to shore, or is he lost at sea, or what happens?

Start the story with the phrase: ”Noah had been sailing for two months when…”

You must use as many of the the following words as possible. Make sure to use the plural form:

woman, leaf, ox, child, foot, mouse, crisis (crises), city, hero, echo, species (species), wolf, sheep, hoof (hooves), louse (lice), cactus (cacti)

En av de mest centrala texter i den västerländska litteraturen är Divina Commedia av Dante Alighieri. Den är central eftersom den står precis i brytpunkten mellan den medeltida världen och renässansen. Det är en motsägelsefull text eftersom den å ena sidan betonar individen och den enskilda människans frihet; samtidigt som den å den andra sidan beskriver ett strängt systematiserat universum där den kristna guden dömer människor till himmel eller helvete.

Divina Commedia handlar om Dantes resa genom världen, hur han som besökare nedstiger i helvetet och sedan fortsätter sin resa till paradiset. Dante blir en reseskildrare från andra sidan. Han berättar för oss om hur grymt helvetet är och hur härligt livet är i paradiset.

Vi får följa Dantes resa ner i helvetet där syndarna placeras allt djupare ner i avgrunden beroende på hur grova synder de har begått.

Men Divina Commedia är kanske inte främst en skildring av ett kristet universum, utan kanske i första hand en bild av människan och människans villkor. I inledningen möter vi Dante ensam på en väg ute i en mörk skog:

Jag stod i mitten av min levnads bana
då i en nermörk skog jag mig befann,
där ej mer väg och stig jag kunde ana.

Ej vet jag längre hur jag skildra kan
en skog så full av grymheten och nöden;
vid minnet än mig skräcken slår i bann.

Detta är förstås en evig bild av människan. Ensam. På en väg: livets väg. Vi befinner oss alla på en väg genom livet och även om skogen (dvs. världen) kan tyckas ljus ibland och mörk ibland så ställs vi inför olika vägval. Vi måste välja var vi ska ta vägen och hur vi ska vara. Dessa val gör vi mot bakgrund av hur vi ser på saker som gott och ont. För vi vill väl alla välja den goda vägen genom livet?

1. Vilka valsituationer har du stått inför i ditt liv? Vilka återstår, tror du? Finns det några kloka råd eller principer man kan hålla sig till när man väljer, som kan hjälpa en att välja “rätt” i livet?

1. Läs The Road Not Taken. Vad betyder denna dikt för dig?
2. Skriv en egen dikt på temat “vägval”. Om du vill kan du imitera stilen hos Dante eller i The Road Not Taken. (Om du är riktigt nyfiken på denna typ av dikter, läs också Herkules av Stiernhielm. Den första dikten på svenska språket!)

One of the greatest pieces of literature to come out of America is, to my mind, The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. The poem has beautiful language, but also a very intriguing story that leaves the reader wondering about questions like love and loss.

The Raven is widely known and quite popular, although some of the words in the poem are old. There is also some references to old myths and gods like Pallas (Athena), which would make it easy to think that most people wouldn’t like it.

Discuss some (or all) of the questions below:
1. What is your reaction to the poem?
2. What, if anything, does the poem tell you?
3. How would you explain the poem’s popularity?
4. What examples of “old language” did you find in the poem? Why did he use such strange words?

Case
You are a prominent representative of a small ethnic group somewhere in a large empire. Your country was once conquered by a great imperial power and has since then been a colony. Your foreign masters have a military might much greater than your own.

In recent years the situation has deteriorated. The explanation is simple. About ten years ago geologists found a rare mineral in the rock at the base of a high mountain. Shortly afterwards mining begun. The mining business has grown and is now a major source of income for your colonial masters, but the working conditions of your people are abominable.

Yesterday you were contacted by an underground movement. (This movement has done sabotage to the mine and also killed a couple of the mining company’s senior officials.) They want you to support their movement and join their violent ways, perhaps as the leader.

Assignment
How would your reply? How could you convince them to use a non-violent solution to the situation? Argue for a non-violent solution, use the example of Martin Luther King Jr (and if you like Mahatma Gandhi).
