Expert?
Those who are in an expert role should have read the text carefully looking up words and phrases. You should know the text and be able to summarize and describe the content. You should also be able to teach the members of the other group some of the words and phrases you picked up. If you don’t understand the technical details of the topic, it does not matter – the important thing is general understanding and new words and phrases.

The point of this exercise is to have a go at reading white papers and to give you an opportunity to pick up language that is quite common in the IT/Business field.

Debate – Engelska C

Daniel Wernegren

This Tuesday we will have a debate on government. Please check your notes and think about what’s different between the US, the UK and Sweden.

The topic is: what system of government is best the UK or the US?

Prepare by choosing which side you support and list arguments and facts in your favour.

We will have two teams. Everyone with a family name staring from A to J will support the US. From M to Ö will support the UK.

The End of History?

Daniel Wernegren

In my series on interesting (but perhaps marginal ;-) ) American cultural personalities, I’d like to introduce this week’s choice: Francis Fukuyama.

Fukuyama became famous in the early 90s, after having published his book The End of History and the Last Man. This book argues that History has come to an end. Well, it isn’t nearly as weird as it first sounds. Fukuyama is not speaking of history in the everyday sense that things for some reason would cease to happen, no, it is something completely different.

Fukuyama is speaking of the history of ideas. This is a notion he has picked up from Karl Marx. Marx saw history as a struggle between competing ideas or ideologies. So, when Fukuyama says that history has come to an end, he is saying that the history of ideas has come to an end.

His argument is based on recent developments in the world of the late twentieth century, namely the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union. These events were seen by Fukuyama as indicative of the fall of the ideology of Communism. To Fukuyama, Communism had lost the historico-ideological conflict of the last century. There was, to him, only one ideology left: liberal democracy.

Fukuyama’s book sparked a controversy among intellectuals and his thesis was highly criticized by, amongst others, the great French scholar Jacques Derrida.

- As an aside I can’t but mention that Fukuyama is by no means the first person to declare the end of history. During the Victorian Age some British scholars were convinced that the nineteenth century was at the pinnacle of human development. There was even some Swede that thought that humankind would see the end of inventions somewhere in the early 1900s. I have no sources though, so believe it if you will. ;-)

(If you’re interested in ‘the end of history’ as a concept you can read the poem Ozymandias in this document.)

Writing

Daniel Wernegren

We continue working with the Quick and dirty tips for better writing. Each and everyone will write the introductions as described in the document. during the first hour and during the second you will get feedback.

We should also consider having a test instead of a reading journal for the second book. Possibly on 28th of April.

Reminder. Everyone should bring the Anglo-American government and Word formation papers to class next Tuesday.

Tip of the day
For those of you who have a computer you can start using iTunes (and possibly your iPod) to download and watch video podcasts. One example is the podcast from Broome Community College, which gives you the opportunity to learn about writing.
