Food around the world

Daniel Wernegren

There is a lot of food to be eaten, that’s for sure. Every country has its own cuisine. Some of them are very popular and have spread around the world like pizza and sushi.

Assignment
I want you to think about your favourite foods and pick a few dishes that you really like and that you know how to make yourself. Then I would like for you to write about your favourite food, what’s so good about it, and instructions on how to cook it and eat it.

Please make sure to look up all the words you need to know (like names of vegetables and/or tools you use to make the food). And also don’t forget to tell us if there are some special circumstances when this food should be served.

Notice

Daniel Wernegren

Please note that there is both a human and a technical element to all presentations. And since I don’t want you to feel more stress, I think that we should be prepared for the fact that the sessions might end later then scheduled (or possibly earlier :-) ). I hope that everybody is understanding of the fact that “things” might happen and that you are all prepared for this contingency, i.e. that you are prepared to stay a few minutes longer – if needed.

Please also notice that the group will only be able to review the video if there is sufficient time. The peer review will be based on the points in this document. Please read it carefully so that you can give constructive feedback to your peers.

Spelling

Daniel Wernegren

Some words are really tricky to spell because they are similar to other words. Do you know the difference between:

were – where
their – there
which – witch
who’s – whose
its – it’s
to – too
he’s – his
these – this
your – you’re
break – brake
loose- lose
whole – hole

Some of these words are homophones. But notice that lose and loose is actually pronounced differently.

Exercises
This document contains two tests on basic grammar and common spelling mistakes.

Here are some interactive exercises. And here you can find more exercises in the form of a quiz. There are three quizzes: easy, medium and hard.

Homonyms
Here is page with a lot of exercises on homonyms. And here is a good one.

Assignment
Post 10 sentences using 15 homophones (or homnyms) correctly.

Cultural awareness

Daniel Wernegren

In an increasingly globalized world cultural differences are both diminished and accentuated. The business community has certain standards of conduct that have spread throughout the world. At the same time there are differences that are worth considering, like religious holidays, restrictions on what to eat and what not to eat, etc. But these things can differ from one country to another and even within a country. So my best advice is to study each country in question carefully and try to learn about its specific cultural habits.

To learn more about these things you could read and work with the following exercises.

Easter

Daniel Wernegren

Easter is a major Christian holiday, although most in Sweden have forgotten about its religious significance. The holiday pays respect to the suffering and crucifiction of Jesus of Nazareth – in most Christian faiths considered the son of God. Traditionally on Good Friday Christians would remember the suffering of Christ and pay respect to him by wearing dark clothes and spending the day in peaceful contemplation or prayer.

On Easter Day Christians typically celebrate the resurrection of Christ.

Easter has also given name to Easter Island in the south Pacific. An island that has become much talked about in recent years, since it once was the home of a great civilization that managed to destroy itself.

During Easter it is common practice to paint and eat eggs. This is done in celebration of spring, the rebirth of nature.

Also, in Russia the old tsar family used to give eachother eggs for Easter, although they wer made out of gold and jewels. These eggs were made by an artist called Peter Carl Fabergé, for that reason these priceless eggs are called Fabergé eggs.

In film there is a classic egg eating scene from the film Angel Heart (1987) that I’m always reminded of during Easter. Robert deNiro eats his egg in a very disturbing way, wouldn’t you agree?

Assignment
1. What does Easter mean to you? What do you do and what are your plans for this year?
